You may have noticed that the Baltimore Orioles have gotten off to a good start so far in the young 2012 season.

Hope springs eternal, and spring makes me eternally hopeful, so it's only fitting to note that baseball was also on the minds of Carroll County readers more than 110 years ago.

On this day in 1899, a local newspaper carried a news story that the local "Westminster Base Ball Club" was looking for a few good baseball players…

"The Westminster Base Ball Club ... desires to win the championship and toward that end desires to have a team composed of good players who will be able to play good base ball, and will take full advantage of the five mile limit in order to obtain the players if they can not be gotten in this city." …

What is that 'five-mile limit' all about? We may need to call upon local historian and Carroll County baseball history expert Dan Hartzler.

According to Mary Ann Ashcraft, an historian for the Historical Society, "Baseball was a big draw in all parts of the county, and competition between local teams often got very intense…"

In the April 22, 1899 article that appeared in the now-defunct Democratic Advocate newspaper, it is interesting to review the set of qualifications desired by the Westminster Base Ball Club.

“While no roughness or rowdyism on the team will be permitted, the team will be no kid glove affair, to the detriment of good ball playing, but every effort will be made to obtain a representative club of conscientious, efficient, and well-behaved ball players…

“The team announced last week will be permanent only so far as the members, so announced, are able to play good ball and play regularly.”

Democratic Advocate, March 25, 1899: Francis J. Englar, a well-known farmer hurt during tree work

A serious accident occurred near Linwood last Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Francis J. Englar, a well-known farmer, was lopping a tree in his yard, and fearing it would damage the adjacent dwelling in falling, he tied a rope to the top and attempted to pull it in an opposite direction.

As it was falling Mr. Englar slipped and fell, while a heavy branch struck and pinned him to the earth.

He was held in that position until assistance arrived, when he was extricated while in an unconscious condition. Medical aid was quickly summoned from Union Bridge, and everything done to alleviate the sufferer. His oldest son was also severely bruised.

J. M. Harden Wagon House destroyed by fire

Democratic Advocate, January 28, 1899

The wagon-house of J. M. Harden, on the Nicodemus road, near Reisterstown, was destroyed by fire at an early hour last Saturday morning.

The loss is $1,250 and the insurance $850. Mr. Harden thinks the building was set on fire by an enemy.

The wagon house contained farming implements and a buggy, all of which were destroyed.

The building was located about 200 feet from Mr. Harden's dwelling house. The fire was discovered shortly before 2 o'clock by Mrs. Harden, just as the roof of the building fell in with a crash.

About two years ago a son of Mr. Harden shot a man in the leg, who, he alleges, was in the act of setting fire to his father's threshing machine.

Silver Run Items—The hotel question is again being discussed among the people of our village. There was a new applicant around for signers, but we cannot say at present whether he will succeed in procuring them or not.

There have been no hotels in this place since last May, and since that time every thing has moved along quietly and all appear to be as happy and hearty as they were before the hotels were closed. But it seems that some of those that do feel happy and hearty since the hotels are closed are still not contented.

It is rumored that some of them that fought hard to have the hotels closed last spring are now giving their consent to have them opened again. This may be a false report, which we hope it is, and if it is not, hereafter we cannot judge our good people by their appearance at first sight.

This season has marked the 120th anniversary of the football team at McDaniel College.

According to Dr. James Lightner's history of the college, "Fearless and Bold," the first football season at then-Western Maryland College, in 1891, consisted of five games.

"On October 31, 1891, the first WMC football game was played in Westminster" against Pennsylvania College, now known as Gettysburg College.

Man rescued from Western Maryland Railroad accident

American Sentinel, October 9, 1897.

A man who gave the name of John Adams attempted to steal a ride on the Western Maryland Railroad, from this city, on Saturday last, and would have lost his life if he had not been discovered and rescued by an employee of the road.

He endeavored to board a freight train, but missed his footing, and would have fallen under the wheels if he had not been caught and supported until the train was stopped.

Justice J. Hoffman Fuss held him for a hearing until Monday and then committed him to the county jail, for thirty days, for violating the law in relation to stealing rides on railroads.

American Sentinel, August 10, 1895

Murder in Manchester District - A brief account of a horrible murder, committed in Manchester district, came to us by telephone yesterday morning.

The victim of the tragedy was a man named Jacob Miller, a comparative stranger in Manchester. Miller had been working in that place and neighborhood for a week or more.

He was a quiet, well behaved and apparently an industrious man. Towards evening of Wednesday afternoon he left Manchester in company with two tramps, going in the direction of Melrose.

During the night persons in the vicinity of a grove near that place heard the noise of fighting in the woods. On Thursday morning the tramps who left Manchester in Miller's company, went into Melrose and reported that the body of a dead man was lying in the woods.

Their story was probably regarded as a fake, and no steps were taken to investigate it, but the report, in some way, reached Manchester and on Thursday night a searching party started out from that place and found Miller's dead body in the woods.

The man had been stabbed in the heart and cut about the face and head. The object of the murder was evidently robbery, as Miller had on his person, when he left Manchester, thirty dollars in money, all of which had disappeared, with other valuables, when the body was found.

An inquest was held, and a verdict rendered that the man was murdered by persons unknown to the jury. The jury was summoned by Justice Strevig.
