Welcome to the Tim Thai Classic restaurant in Westminster. 

Eating at an ethnic restaurant is certainly nothing new in Carroll County. Ever since William Winchester founded Westminster in 1764 on one of the three main roads in Maryland for travelers headed west, there has always been a strong restaurant tradition in town.

Last Friday night, November 15, 2013, after John and Debby Sosnowsky’s opening at Off Track Art, John, Debby and Corrie Sosnowsky, Bobby Waddell, Linda Van Hart, Caroline Babylon and I went over to the Tim Thai Classic restaurant in Westminster at 17 East Main Street for some food and fellowship.

There has been a restaurant at 17 East Main Street as long as most folks can remember. It is believed that the “Central Restaurant” was located there as far back as the 1950s. Much more research will be needed to determine when the Central Restaurant opened and closed. Phone books from the very early 1950s show a “Central Restaurant” located in Hampstead at 20 South Main Street, but not in Westminster.

The 1952 Westminster phone directory shows Acme Market at 1 East Main Street; Treat Shop – owned by the Burk Family – at 5 East Main; the Carroll Pastry Shop at 7 East Main; “The American Restaurant” at 9 East Main; The Coffman-Fisher Co. Dept. Store at 11 East Main; Hollander’s Home & Auto Supplies at 13 East Main; Read’s Drug and Chemical C0 at 15 East Main; and 17 is listed for “Dryden, Clarence C, Helen F Myrtle… Kipe Doris, Larry E Martin.” Are we understand that it was a residence in 1952?

The 1954 phone directory does not show a listing for a restaurant. (It does give my address as 40 Ward Avenue in Westminster.)

In recent years, 17 East Main Street has been a Thai restaurant for many-many years. However, we were not aware that it recently changed hands.

Although the new owners of the Thai restaurant at 17 East Main Street have repainted some of the walls and are in the process of changing a few things around; the food and the service were still wonderful.

I had the vegetable fried rice, spring rolls, and shitake soup; plus a little of this and a little of that off of my friends’ plates. Caroline had the eggplant tofu. It was all delicious. And the service was friendly, conversational, personable and personal.

The website, http://www.thaiclassiconline.com/ notes, “We have recently changed ownership and management. As such our menu (now posted) will be changing.

“Our offerings are individually cooked in the traditional way. Thai and other Asian foods that have been "tweaked" for American tastes. “Come in and try our Tom Kha (coconut soup) and taste the balance of sweetness and tartness…”

In addition to an article in the Baltimore Sun on February 11, 2013, I have written quite a number of articles on restaurants, inns, hotels and saloons in Westminster…

History of Giulianova Groceria, 11 E. Main St. in Westminster, MD

Giulianova Groceria, http://www.brothersun.biz/history.html: Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Street community for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs. 

Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio.

After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill.  Don't bother driving to Philadelphia, New York, or even Baltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!

Dear Editor,

The moving of a Little Caesars Pizza shop right next to Mediterraneo Restaurant is the last straw.

In the past ten years, there have been some alarming realities among small business in Carroll County. The following examples are not necessarily in chronological order.

The Co-Op grocery store has been replaced by a Food Lion.

The Pennsylvania Dutch Market has been replaced by an Advanced Auto Parts and a PetSmart

Lowes and Home Depot have forced the closure of regional, locally owned hardware stores; Schaefer's, Albert's, and Kopp to name three.

Papa John's built next to Frisco's Pub, which no longer in business.

Race Pace Bicycles built within walking distance of White's Bicycles.

Little Caesar's recently opened next to the Mediterraneo.

Firehouse Subs next to Roberto's.

IHOP being being placed one block away from Baugher's family restaurant.

Quiznio's opened in the same shopping center as Ledo's Pizza.

Starbucks built around the corner from Starry Night Bakery.

A Greene Turtle, Applebee's, and Ruby Tuesday within walking distance from Time Out Sports Bar and Grille, no longer in business.

Olive Garden across the street from Maria's, no longer in business.

I say put the Little Caesars next to Pizza Hut and see what Pizza hut has to say. Put the IHOP next to Bob Evans and see what happens. As a small business owner am I supposed to sit idly by and suck it up? Small business is the backbone of America and it is hard enough competing with the Wall Marts of the world. How many more Subways, Jiffy Marts, Wa Wa's, 7-11's ECT does one small town need. Only we the consumers can make a difference

Twenty-five cents on each dollar of a business' gross income is immediately spent in taxes, licenses, and fees. When shopping locally, the remaining 75 cents is recycled back into the community. Adversely, when shopping in chain establishments that money is absorbed and spent within the corporation. Where are we going, Westminster? What are we becoming? I am afraid that the Westminster I have grown to know and love is losing the 'small town' flavor I cherish. Living in Westminster has lost the feeling of being home' and has morphed into merely a place to live.

There is still time to reverse this direction. Please help us regain what we have lost. Please, Please, Please support small business. If the course we are on continues, we will certainly dry up and blow away.

This is a photo that I took of Stan from the roof of the old firehouse building on Main Street, on May 8, 2004. Stan and I had gone there to gather a bird's eye view of the city. That day we were up there for hours, brainstorming and discussing economic development and planning ideas for Westminster.

Stan was recognized by many as a leading authority on planning and economic development for small communities. Because he was also an artist, he understood the value of a vibrant arts and culture presence in a community and he was good at thinking out of the box. He had a wonderful sense of humor and he clearly understood that it was not good enough to be the best, you had to be nice, and Stan was one of the nicest public officials I have ever worked with in my forty-years of working with the public.

I'm really sad about Stan's passing. It is a great personal loss for me and a huge loss for the Westminster and Maryland.

Stan Ruchlewicz, the City of Westminster's administrator of economic development and Main Street manager, died June 5.

The news in Westminster spread quickly Tuesday that he had suffered a heart attack earlier in the day.
